Kung Fu (also spelled gongfu or gung fu, from the Chinese 功夫) refers to any skill or ability developed through consistent hard work, discipline, and practice. While it is best known for its connection to martial arts, the term can also be used to describe mastery in art, writing, cooking, music, craftsmanship or anything perfected through dedication.
What is Kung Fu?
“Kung Fu is any skill achieved through patience, effort, and discipline.”
Already started your fitness journey and want to take the next step? If you are thinking about learning Shaolin Kung Fu and are looking to leap into a new, intensive adventure, now is your chance! You can visit and train at my Kung Fu School in Henan, China.
Training in China
Kungfused Art Studio
As an extension of my Shaolin practice, I draw by hand and create art pieces of the temples around my training grounds in China. I believe that meditation and mindfulness, whether through journaling, drawing or self-reflection to find inner calm, are just as important as the physical training itself.
You can take a look at my artwork in the gallery below. Perhaps in the future, I will make some limited prints available.
Frequently Asked Questions
I receive lots of enquiries on my social media pages every week, and thought the best way to solve this is to answer your questions here.
I try to read as many of your messages as possible, and although I can’t reply individually to them all, it brings me great joy to read that many of you have been inspired to start your own training journey. Keep going!

This is the question I get the most, but I’m not sure I can fully answer it yet. Why did I start training, or, more importantly, why did I continue with it.
I started because I wanted to live far away in a temple on a mountain, and find a sense of peace. I wanted to have space from my reality, to reflect on what I really wanted from life. A monastic lifestyle and period of introspection. But, I was already training six times a week in other sports. Training keeps me steady and my mind clear. I thought, ‘How can I go running or swimming if I’m living on the top of a mountain?’ And realised, I needed to find somewhere where I could have both the peace of a temple and the discipline of a sport. The answer: Kung Fu. That’s how it began.

Yes, of course! It’s an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience, as long as you go with an open mind. I would recommend you have a good level of fitness before you go, because the drills and daily training can be gruelling. Do be mindful and respectful of China’s rules as well as their culture while visiting. Learning a few phrases in Chinese will take you far! Prepare well, get into your own training routine, and I hope to meet you there!
(Check out the section on this page called ‘Trainining in China’ if you are interested in training at my Shaolin Kung Fu school in Henan!)

Yes, I’m a very sporty woman. Kung Fu actually came later for me. Before Kung Fu, I began my fitness journey several years ago. Over the years, I’ve dabbled in a number of sports and hold a qualification as a Pro-level Divemaster scuba diver. I spent three years leading amateur basketball and touch rugby clubs, then got into running and wild swimming. This led me to take up triathlon training. I continued this training and increased my running mileage, up until I visited China for the first time, where I found Kung Fu.
Since then, I continue to train six times a week in martial arts. My focus is on Shaolin Kung Fu, Kickboxing and Lau Gar Kung Fu, and I keep up regularly running in my free time.

I wanted to find a way to motivate other people to start training, to advocate for sport as a way to improve mental and physical well-being. My Chinese Kung Fu Master encouraged me to start sharing my training journey on social media to accomplish this goal, and it resonated with so many people, I realised this was something I had to do, to help and inspire others.
